Howard The Duck Wasn't Actually The First Marvel Comics Movie
By WILLIAM BIBBIANI
Many fans believe "Howard the Duck," a story about an anthropomorphic waterfowl from another planet who ends up in Cleveland, Ohio, to be the first Marvel movie. They're wrong.
Richard Fleischer's film "Red Sonja" is about a warrior forged by tragedy who's unwavering in her commitment to never be conquered by a man through fair combat.
"Red Sonja" was the third feature film set in Hyboria, the action-packed world of high adventure created in 1932 by Robert E. Howard.
The Red Sonja character first appeared in the 23rd issue of Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian," by writers Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, in 1973.
Somehow, the "Red Sonja" movie got away with using Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's almost completely original version of the character without crediting them or Marvel Comics.
While "Red Sonja" may not be an official Marvel Comics film, and the character isn't even published by Marvel anymore, it was still an adaptation of a Marvel comic at the time.
