How What
We Do In
The Shadows Dodged Comedy's Most Tired Romance Trope
By DANIELLE RYAN
In “What We Do in the Shadows,” the absence of deep conflict between vampires Nadja and Laszlo is what sets them apart from other sitcom couples. Instead of being at each other’s throats for comedic effect, Nadja and Laszlo trust and support each other, respect each other as equal partners, and are very attracted to one another.
The actors who play Nadja and Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou and Matt Berry, respectively, know their pairing isn’t the tv norm. In an interview, Demetriou explained how in sitcoms, “the [...] main couple are sort of arguing a lot and getting on each other's nerves.” Berry agreed by stating, “it's very, very rare in comedy to see a couple not be [...] on the edge of kind of breaking up.”
Both actors enjoy playing such a loving couple with Demetriou saying how “it's so fun [that] they're just like, "Oh!," you know, so horny for each other the whole time." Berry echoed her thoughts, stating, “it’s a real kind of breath of fresh air when [it] doesn't matter where they've been or what they've just done, who they've done it to, they can't wait to get back in the sack."
