The 1986 film "Stand By Me," based on Stephen King's novella "The Body," evoked a profoundly emotional and personal response from the author, leaving him speechless for a while.
According to Rob Reiner, the film's director, King was so overwhelmed with emotion after the screening that he "went away for about 15 minutes" to gather his thoughts.
When King returned, he shared how the story mirrored his own life, revealing that "all three of his buddies had died," making it hard to see them brought back to life on screen.
King hailed "Stand By Me" as "probably" the best film adaptation of his work. He appreciated the movie for being true to the book and capturing its emotional essence.
"It was moving ... When the movie was over, I hugged [Rob Reiner] because I was moved to tears, because it was so autobiographical," King told Rolling Stone years later.
