While who lived and died at the end of "Avengers: Infinity War" was narratively done randomly, the decision of who survived Thanos' war fell on the Marvel executives and writers.
The book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, recounts how they actually chose the survivors for the next film.
While who lived and died at the end of "Avengers: Infinity War" was narratively done randomly, the decision of who survived Thanos' war fell on the Marvel executives and writers.
The room was filled with cards of every MCU character available to appear in the film. According to the book, they played a card game — "Who Lives and Who Dies."
Feige said they chose based on what "would be the most heartbreaking," like killing Peter Parker to hurt Tony Stark. However, there were also financial reasons for the decisions.
The filmmakers also decided to keep the original Avengers alive to finish their stories in "Endgame" and bring characters to the film whose personalities could fill in any gaps.
