How I Am Legend 2 Will Ignore The First Movie's Ending
By BJ COLANGELO
The 2007 film adaptation of Richard Matheson's “I Am Legend” took in over $585 million worldwide at the box office, but its ending deviated heavily from the source material. The unending discourse surrounding the film's controversial ending is perhaps why filmmaker Akiva Goldsman announced that “I Am Legend 2” will disregard the ending of the original film.
In the film’s original alternate ending, Dr. Neville realizes that the Darkseekers are actually a new form of civil society and that he has become a monster to them because he’s trying to “cure” them of their nature with his research. Goldsman told Deadline that the film will take place decades after the first film and follow the film's original alternate ending.
Goldsman said the story will “trace back to the original Matheson book,” adding, “What Matheson was talking about was that man's time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That's a really interesting thing we're going to get to explore.” It’ll be fascinating to see the Darkseekers maintaining their own society in the highly-anticipated “I Am Legend 2.”
