How Danny Elfman's DNA Found Its Way Into Batman: The Animated Series
By MARCOS MELENDEZ
In more ways than one, "Batman: The Animated Series" paved the way for a new era of superhero television. In addition to creating a universe of animated projects based on DC's greatest characters, it launched Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill into the now iconic voices of Batman and the Joker, respectively.
The show also has a magnificent musical score, as composer Shirley Walker perfectly captures the heightened world of Gotham City and its players without feeling corny or campy. It’s no accident that it sounds familiar to Danny Elfman's "Batman" theme, since Walker had previously worked with him on the original and wanted to pay homage while adding her own flair.
Her work on "Batman" started a journey that led to decades of superhero gold. After "Batman: The Animated Series," Walker later composed the music for "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm." On television, she continued to shine with "Batman Beyond," "Superman: The Animated Series," and "The New Batman Adventures."
