How Cartoon Network Helped Give Us The Daft Punk We Know Today
By RYAN SCOTT
Daft Punk is one of the most renowned music groups, with Grammy-winning hit songs like “Get Lucky” and their work on soundtracks to blockbuster movies like “Tron: Legacy.”
However, one early boost in the musical duo’s career came from an unlikely source: anime-inspired music videos that aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami.
When speaking with Complex, Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco explained that Daft Punk contacted them while the musical duo was preparing to premiere a music video project.
Daft Punk had asked if they would air two of their upcoming music videos from their project titled “Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem” on Toonami.
Kazuhisa Takenouchi directed the project, which takes the entirety of their second studio album, “Discovery,” and weaves an anime narrative around the album’s songs.
While their debut album, “Homework,” was relatively successful, “Discovery” would be on a whole new level for the band, thanks in no small part to the exposure it got on Toonami.
