How Bones Cleverly Covered Up Emily Deschanel’s Real-Life Injury

The “Bones” Season 4 episode, “Double Trouble in the Panhandle,” saw Temperance “Bones” Brennan and Seeley Booth going undercover at a traveling circus as a knife-throwing act.
While her character would walk away without a scratch, Emily Deschanel wasn’t so lucky and actually bruised her eye when performing her stunts.
Rather than trying to hide it, the show incorporated it into the story. Deschanel explained their solution to TV Tango while she expressed her fondness for the episode.
“I actually hit my eye in real life and I have a bruised eyeball, and so we had to think of a way of covering that in that episode so I got an eyepatch," Deschanel said.
During the episode, Booth accidentally smacks Bones in the face while fending off a posse of angry clowns, explaining the reason for her injury and eye patch.
