How (And Why) Community Filmed Chevy Chase’s Hologram Farewell Scene
By MIKE SHUTT
While Chevy Chase’s Pierce was an integral part of “Community,” the actor himself was problematic for many involved in the show, leading to his abrupt departure in Season 4.
After series creator Dan Harmon returned to “Community” for Season 5, he felt there needed to be more to Pierce’s sudden exit and reached out to Chase to film a final scene.
Chase agreed to film a secret scene where he didn’t have to interact with anyone else — Pierce would appear as a hologram in the Season 5 premiere, “Repilot.”
Harmon explained that Joel McHale was the only cast member to know of the brief cameo, as the actor had to “say ‘Pierce’ to an empty space in front of a motion control camera.”
Although Pierce was pronounced dead two episodes later, this surprising final moment was hilarious, but also showed that “Community” would be just fine without him.
