House Of The Dragon Will ‘Get To The Spectacle’ Of War In Season 2
By MIKE SHUTT
Some of the best scenes in “House of the Dragon” — and “Game of Thrones” before it — are comprised of backroom wheeling and dealing, and while this battle of wits is entertaining, some fans are hankering for a real fight. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, there’s a reason the show took so long to build up to war, and all that time will pay off in Season 2.
Although war is eminent in “House of the Dragon,” the show wanted audiences to have the time to understand and invest in characters before they’re thrown into bloody conflict. As Condal explained, “…you have to understand these people’s complexities before they’re thrown into war… [then] viewers will feel the tragedies because we put the work in.”
Condal’s point seems to be proven by Season 1’s battle against the Crabfeeder. This large-scale and bloody battle was largely unsatisfying because audiences didn’t have a chance to fully invest in the
characters, while that tense moment when Alicent lunged at Rhaenyra with the catspaw dagger had a much stronger impact.
