Here's Why Shazam! Fury of the Gods Bombed at the Box Office
By RYAN SCOTT
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” has taken another box office beating with the debut of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is catastrophic news for those at DC and Warner Bros.
With the movie only currently making $128 million against its $125 million budget, Warner Bros. Discovery is set to take a heavy loss due to marketing costs and theater profits.
Despite being a follow-up to 2019’s popular “Shazam!” film, this sequel failed to live up to expectations and will go down as one of the biggest flops in the superhero genre.
Similarly to how “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” flopping may be tied to Disney buying Fox, “Fury of the Gods” might have suffered from the announcement of the DC film universe reboot.
Further hurting “Fury of the Gods” are the less-than-stellar reviews and the lack of buzz surrounding the film, compared to the superhero’s first outing several years ago.
As “Fury of the Gods” joins films like “Catwoman” as the biggest superhero failures, Warner Bros. Discovery might be justified in their decision to reboot the DC film franchise.
