Here's Where You Can Watch Elvis at Home
By SHANIA RUSSELL
"Elvis" is the latest from maximalist auteur Baz Luhrmann whose dazzling direction is a fascinating fit for a musical biopic starring Austin Butler as The King. If you haven’t made it to theaters, here's some good news: soon you'll be able to enjoy his dance moves from the comfort of our own home.
During the early stages of the pandemic, Warner Bros. released "Project Popcorn," in which all the studio's 2021 theatrical films were offered on HBO Max simultaneously, ‌but now a 45-day window has been implemented and has been followed since. Since "Elvis" is a Warner Bros. production, it would have been safe to assume that it will air on HBO Max, but this will not be the case.
However, Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" will break away from this pattern and instead head straight to PVOD. As of August 9, 2022, it is solely available on PVOD and may be rented for $19.99 for 48 hours or purchased for $24.99 through retailers such as Amazon, Vudu, iTunes, and Google Play, and streaming on HBO Max will only begin in fall 2022.
Warner Bros. probably made “Elvis” available on PVOD to get an immediate financial gain, instead of offering it for free to HBO Max subscribers. However, in light of the recent news about the studio removing HBO Max exclusives for tax write-offs, the future of the streaming service is also being brought into question.
