Here Are The Lord Of The Rings TV Series Pitches Amazon Turned Down
By JEREMY MATHAI
The fantasy series showdown between Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” is on. While rumors arose and pointed toward different concepts for Amazon’s Tolkien series, “The Rings of Power” was eventually chosen over other ideas.
The “Rings of Power” showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay revealed that “dozens” of other creators were pitching ideas to Amazon, who had bought the rights to Tolkien’s extensive works. “So you had people pitching the Young Aragon [sic] show, or the Gimli spinoff, or other kinds of things,” commented Payne.
While there will be some familiar faces in “The Rings of Power,” it won’t be as directly connected to the characters of “Lord of the Rings” as some people were pitching. The series, which takes place thousands of years before the events of the trilogy, is set to release on September 2, 2022.
