Harry Potter Had A Heavy Influence On One Part Of Avengers: Endgame
By MICHAEL BOYLE
One pleasant surprise of “Avengers: Endgame” was the early reveal that it was going to be a time-travel story. Screenwriter Stephen McFeely used Harry Potter for inspiration.
In a 2019 interview, McFeely said he particularly drew inspiration from the time travel elements present in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
McFeely said, “I do love that third ‘Harry Potter’ movie, where a stone will break a vase. You don't know why and the scene's fine and it doesn't take you out of it.”
He continued, “Then when you come back around and you realize that they had thrown it at themselves, I do love that.” However, he didn’t really copy “Prisoner of Azkaban.”
The difference is that Harry and Hermione’s time-travel actions in the past didn't alter visible events on screen, they simply corrected things unnoticed from Harry's perspective.
In “Endgame,” the movie works on the idea that every change in the past creates a parallel universe, while nothing Harry and Hermione do follows this method of time travel.
However, what the two do have in common is the way they introduce time travel in a surprising, cathartic way. Time travel allows the story to advance in a more hopeful manner.
