Grown-Up Groot Is Absolutely Terrifying In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special
By RAFAEL MOTAMAYOR
The "Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" is a sweet and endearing story about the magic of Christmas, following one of the genre's grand traditions: Christmas horror. Amidst the cuteness of Drax and Mantis trying to make Peter feel better about Gamora by giving him the gift of Kevin Bacon, the sight of baby-faced, wooden behemoth Groot dancing to Christmas music is unsettling.
The most surprising thing about swole, grown-up Groot is not necessarily his size, but how different he is from the original adult Groot. This is not a case of Groot simply going through a gym phase that he'll grow out of, but a grim reminder of one of the saddest scenes in the MCU: Groot's actual death.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn confirmed that the Groot we met in the first film is dead and gone, having sacrificed himself to save the other Guardians from Ronan the Accuser's crashing ship. The result is his nightmare-inducing offspring, a child born out of the corpse of his father, which is deeply sad and a little disturbing.
