Godzilla Minus One Used Surprisingly Little CGI
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
"Godzilla Minus One" was a reminder that visual effects can actually be amazing. Despite the film’s accolades for its visuals, it uses relatively little digital art.
While speaking to Variety, Takashi Yamazaki, the film's director, writer, and visual effects supervisor, revealed that it took just 610 VFX shots to make Godzilla come to life.
For comparison, Legendary’s 2019 "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" used 1,535 VFX shots, while others like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" reportedly used 1500.
This disparity is due to budget. "Godzilla Minus One" had to effectively use its $15 million budget and get the most out of its limited funds.
According to Yamazaki, most of the VFX shots were used during the climax, especially when Godzilla crumbles to pieces and returns to the sea.
