George R.R. Martin Helped Write A Twilight Zone Episode About Elvis
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
Before he wrote " A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, novelist George R.R. Martin penned an episode of "The Twilight Zone" reboot about two Elvis Presleys.
The episode "The Once and Future King" sees a spot-on Elvis impersonator traveling back in time where he meets the real rockstar on the eve of Elvis' first studio session.
Martin reminisced about writing the episode and shared that executive producer Phil DeGuere asked the author to write an episode for the 1985 to 1989 reboot series.
He would write five scripts over the course of a season and a half of the series, starting with the episode before the Elvis one: the season finale "The Last Defender of Camelot."
Martin added, "I was deeply involved in every aspect of every one of them. I did not just write my script, turn it in, and go away. I sat in on the casting sessions."
Decades later, opinions on "The Once and Future King" and the '80s "Twilight Zone" reboot remain mixed. However, some believe the episode is one of the best in the series.
