Futurama's Zapp Brannigan Stole A Move From Matt Groening's Kid
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In the "Futurama" episode "When Aliens Attack," Zapp Brannigan salutes by pounding a fist to his chest, touching it to his forehead, opening his palm, and waving it into the air.
It came after Zapp flirted with Leela. According to "Futurama" co-creator Matt Groening on the episode's DVD commentary, his son Will invented the "heart, head, and away" salute.
Groening explained on the commentary track, "Oh! That was my son, Will. I said, 'How do they salute in the future?' And he did that: Head, to heart, and away."
