Futurama’s Fry & Leela Wedding Predicted The Show’s Hulu Revival
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
After “Futurama” was canceled and revived three times, co-creator David X. Cohen revealed that he wrote the Season 7 series finale with an eye towards the show being revived again.
In the Season 7 finale “Meanwhile,” time freezes, and only Fry and Leela remain. With the world frozen, Fry and Leela get married, wander the Earth, and become very old.
At the end of “Meanwhile,” Professor Farnsworth pops in from another timeline and repairs a time travel device that will erase all history after he first invented the device.
Fry and Leela decide they loved their life together so much that they want to redo it. They use the device to erase time, and their will-they-won’t-they dynamic is restored.
Cohen said in a 2021 reunion special, “We know not to chop everyone’s head off at the end [...] you never know if you’re going to need those characters next week.”
After being revived again, “Futurama” is in its 11th season and streaming on Hulu. Just as the series was reborn, so too were the characters and the status quo of their dynamics.
