Frasier’s Theme Song Was Forbidden From Mentioning These Three Things
By DANIELLE RYAN
The theme song for “Frasier” is catchy and has some unusual lyrics, but that was done on purpose. The composer, Bruce Miller, talked about it in a retrospective video on the song.
The reason behind the “tossed salad and scrambled eggs” lyrics is that Miller was forbidden from mentioning three subjects in the song. The instructions were very specific.
Miller recalls series creator David Angell saying, “‘Don’t mention Seattle, don’t mention Frasier, don’t mention psychiatrists. Don't mention anything having to do with the show.’”
After writing the music, Miller had Darryl Phinnessee write the lyrics and he came up with “tossed salad and scrambled eggs” because they’re things that are “mixed up.”
It is brilliant because it makes sense with Frasier’s psychiatry patients. When you start looking at the lyrics through a metaphorical lens, their meaning becomes more evident.
