Everything We Know About Last Friday So Far
By BEN F. SILVERIO
In 2011, Ice Cube and New Line Cinema announced the development of the last film of the “Friday” series, “Last Friday.” 10 years and two script drafts later, as well as the unfortunate passings of John Witherspoon and Tommy "Tiny" Lister, the project is now in development limbo amidst Cube’s fight with New Line over the film rights.
In 2021, Cube revealed that while he loved the two script drafts, New Line didn’t agree and sent long notes on why the stories wouldn’t work. Cube mentioned that the studio didn’t approve the first one as it had a cannabis storyline (before weed was legal,) and while he didn’t go into specifics about the second script, the studio apparently didn’t like a love story element that wasn’t even that prominent.
More recently, Cube accused New Line of purposefully delaying production and of discrimination as his work is “habitually underfunded in comparison with projects featuring white casts and creative teams.” The studio has denied these claims, saying that the delay is due to Cube’s “unwillingness” to work with them and that they support diverse filmmakers.
