Everyone On Set Stripped Down For Sally Kellerman’s Nude M*A*S*H Scene
By DANIELLE RYAN
The film "M*A*S*H" differs hugely from the TV series, with a more explicit tone, darker themes, and increased violence, earning it an R rating for swearing, violence, and nudity
The movie's famous nude scene features the late Sally Kellerman as Chief Nurse Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan taking a shower when the pranksters pull away the flaps of her tent.
Kellerman was mostly game but was really nervous about her first nude scene. To help her anxiety, director Robert Altman decided to distract her with additional nudity.
In Mitchell Zuckoff's book “Robert Altman: The Oral Biography,” Kellerman recalls director Robert Altman's audacious idea of having the entire cast strip down in solidarity.
She vividly recalls the overwhelming surprise that swept over her when she spotted castmates had also undressed, saying, “Gary Burghoff stark naked standing in front of me.”
Kellerman had no resentment toward the experience or direction, stating, "So I attribute my Academy Award nomination to the people who made my mouth hang open when I hit the deck."
