Mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi used "Hunter x Hunter" in part to keep drawing strange new creatures, but his new characters are echoes of his "Yu Yu Hakusho" creations.
Yusuke x Gon
Yusuke Urameshi and Gon Freecss both wear green but the two protagonists are the characters in their overlapping quartets who are the least like each other.
Kazuma x Leorio
Togashi uses the tallest main characters, Kazuma Kuwabara and Leorio Paradinight, as comedians. Leorio shares Kuwabara's cockiness, but isn’t a "lovable dumbass."
Kurama x Kurapika
Both characters have soft features and long hair, and so don't look that masculine. Their effeminacy isn't the only quality they share: they're both smart.
Hiei x Killua
The fourth member of these groups is the most bloodthirsty. Both are short and have similar powers, but Hiei is rude, while Killua is a chipper yet terrifying killer.
