Eva Marie Saint Had To Follow Three Rules On The Set Of North By Northwest
By MIKE SHUTT
While Alfred Hitchcock created many classic films, the famed director didn't have much respect for an actor's process, even joking that they should be "treated like cattle."
When Hitchcock worked with Eva Marie Saint for "North by Northwest," he gave the Oscar-winning actor some straightforward, practical directorial advice.
Saint's process is about the internal building of a character. However, some actors can get wrapped up in internalizing the character and forget the other aspects of performing.
When speaking at the 2010 TCM Classic Film Festival, Saint revealed the advice Hitchcock gave her that allowed her to give a performance best suited for the film.
She shared, "He only gave me three things as a director. He said, 'Lower your voice, don't use your hands, and look directly into Cary Grant's eyes at all times.'"
