Escape From L.A.'s Most Meta Moment Was All Kurt Russell's Idea
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
The most meta moment in "Escape from L.A." — where Kurt Russell's character Snake Plissken breaks the fourth wall and says, "Welcome to the human race" — was entirely his idea.
In an interview with Forbes, director John Carpenter confirmed that Russell wrote the scene himself, saying, "That was Kurt's idea. It was something he desperately wanted to do."
The scene occurs in the climax when Plissken retrieves a remote control that can shut down all electronic devices worldwide but refuses to hand it over to the corrupt president.
Instead, he chooses to shut down every nation on the planet, bringing about a technological apocalypse. As the lights go out, he looks at the camera and delivers the famous line.
