Eli Roth's Borderlands Movie Has Everyone United In First Reactions

"Borderlands" mixes near-future sociopolitical concerns with humanity's attempts to covet alien architecture. Adapting such a distinct video game franchise is a daunting task.
According to the first reactions after the movie’s world premiere on August 6, 2024, most responses to “Borderlands” describe it as "uninspired" or "a disaster."
This does not appear to be a case where Eli Roth's adaptation is merely flawed, as everything from the film's tone to its performances is being firmly criticized.
Film critic Adriano Caporusso said "this film swaps the mayhem and imagination of the games [...] for a dud with annoying characters and a cast with not one ounce of chemistry."
Live-action can do the story justice but it is better suited for an animated adaptation like the games' flashy art style, jarring line art, and hyperrealistic caricatures.
