Dune Director Hits Back At Long Movie Complainers
By JEREMY SMITH
When "Dune: Part Two" measured 166 minutes, director Villeneuve heard criticism about viewers not liking long runtimes in blockbuster films. However, he quickly dismissed it.
Villeneuve told The Times, "This was the only way I could succeed.” Certainly the $711.8 million global gross of "Dune: Part Two" is evidence enough that he may have been right.
"There is a trend," said Villeneuve. "The youth love to watch long movies because if they pay, they want to see something substantial. They are craving meaningful content."
Villeneuve didn't cite any specific statistics to support the thesis he presented in The Times, but “Dune’s” box office results were driven largely by teens and 20-somethings.
