Donnie Yen’s Caine Was A ‘Different Beast’ For The Editors Of John Wick 4
By JOE ROBERTS
Martial artist Donnie Yen proved to be a standout as Caine in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” though he might have been lost amid the chaotic action if not for editor Nathan Orloff.
The editor explained, “I made this decision early on that stuck: when Donnie is fighting another main character, there's no music. I wanted everyone to hear what Caine hears.”
Orloff continued, “I wanted people to hear that this is doable. It created this eeriness around Caine where he felt different than all the other characters.”
Viewers can hear music during the Osaka Continental Hotel scene, where Wick fends off an assault by thugs; however, it ceases once Caine faces off against the titular hero.
The sound choice brought viewers to what Orloff called “Caine’s world.” The editor described Caine as “a different beast,” and the sound design helped change up the film’s pace.
