Did A Tornado Really Destroy A Drive-In Theater Playing Twister?
By BJ COLANGELO
The Can-View 4 drive-in complex in Thorold, Ontario, Canada, showed "Twister" a few weeks after the film's opening. Unfortunately, a real tornado plowed through the complex.
A tornado destroyed the screen, and the story made headlines across the globe. People on Reddit have since shared the stories their parents told them about being there that day.
Two decades after the storm, "Cursed Films" director Jay Cheel interviewed the audience and employees of the theater there that night for his 2016 short documentary "Twisted."
While Cheel's investigation does confirm that a tornado wrecked the Can-View 4 that night, it wasn't the screen playing "Twister" despite all the stories.
The Can-View lost power before the scheduled screenings and closed up before it could play a movie. This fact raises the question of why there are so many stories about that night.
Luckily, "Twisted" isn't just about the tornado that damaged the Can-View but also how memories can be warped by time, the influence of pop culture, and buying into narratives.
