This story contains spoilers for “Dexter: New Blood”
Given that “Dexter: New Blood” ended with what appeared to be the titular character's true death, it was clear that the “Dexter” revival was initially envisioned as a miniseries. However, according to TVLine, Showtime executives are considering spinoff ideas, and one in particular is a questionable prequel series that focuses on Dexter's youth.
A “Dexter” prequel is a curious choice, considering that the original series showed viewers everything they needed to see from the serial killer's childhood. If Dexter was having a moment of crisis, it usually led to a flashback sequence that shows how he got to that point. There doesn’t seem much left to explore with the character's already-trodden past.
Although developing a “Dexter” prequel feels arguably unnecessary, dubious concepts have rarely stopped Hollywood executives from attempting needless spinoffs of a popular TV series or movie. Fans will just have to wait and see if Showtime has any surprisingly refreshing tricks up its sleeve.
