Deep Space Nine Stole The Budget Of Star Trek: TNG’s The Chase Episode
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
By the time the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Chase" aired in 1993, Trekkies knew enough to ask why — from an in-canon perspective — all aliens looked like humans.
In the book "Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages," executive producer Rick Berman said that the script had been kicked around the Paramount offices for years.
No writer was able to unlock it or make the story work, but Ron D. Moore and Joe Menosky eventually got the script to come together. Still, Berman wasn’t quite satisfied.
Moore said what he originally envisioned would be too expensive to realize. They started cutting it down, but then "Deep Space Nine" started sapping up money.
Cast member Jonathan Frakes directed the episode. He was upset that it had to be shot on a soundstage rather than on location and thought it looked cheap.
