Darth Vader’s Actor Used His Mask To Hide NSFW Improv In Star Wars
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
When Darth Vader’s actor David Prowse was filming "Star Wars" back in 1976, he knew that his face would be obscured, but not that James Earl Jones’ voice would be dubbed over his.
By the time of the sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," Prowse knew the score. He would say and do things that he wouldn’t normally do because he knew his voice would be dubbed over.
In J.W. Rinzler's book "The Making of the Empire Strikes Back," Prowse recounted his silliness and even some of the obscene four-letter words he dropped into certain scenes.
Prowse recalled that he was able to get away with naughty language because his mask had no microphone in it and he had to shout his dialogue through it, and no one heard him.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," Prowse would replace the phrase "The asteroids do not concern me, I want that ship” with "Hemorrhoids do not concern me, I need a s***."
