Dan Harmon Sees Community As Rick And Morty’s Opposite
By RAFAEL MOTAMAYOR
Dan Harmon is the creator of the wildly popular shows “Community” and “Rick and Morty.” Both are full of references and adult content, but Harmon says they’re actually opposites.
Harmon says the theme of “Community” is “anything that's human is more valuable than anything inhuman […] [anything inhuman] is wrong compared to anything with a beating heart.”
“Rick and Morty,” by contrast, Harmon posits, "Nobody exists on purpose, this is all random, [and] that can be terrifying [...] the best we can say is you're not alone."
“Rick and Morty” is much more nihilistic than “Community,” as Rick’s exposure to the colorful universe makes him detached and distant from everything.
While Jeff Winger often acts like Rick, the rest of the “Community” cast and the show itself fights his cynicism, giving it a more hopeful and humanistic tone.
