Community's Chevy Chase on Being Called a Jerk: 'I
Don't Care
By JEREMY SMITH
Comedy legend Chevy Chase has built a reputation as being difficult to work with, going so far as to pick fights with those around him who are trying to help revitalize his career.
When “Community” creator Dan Harmon chose the actor for the role of Pierce Hawthorne, the rather crass millionaire, it was only a matter of time before Chase would stir up trouble.
The actor made several racist remarks while on set, with his co-star Donald Glover sharing that Chase told him, “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black.”
Chase’s offensive behavior eventually wore out its welcome — especially after he allegedly used the n-word — and the actor left the show during the fourth season.
The former “Community” star apparently didn’t have any regrets about his departure, saying, “I don’t give a crap! I am who I am. And I like where — who I am. I don’t care.”
Perhaps Chase lashed out because of his flailing career, an opinion Glover holds: “I just saw Chevy as fighting time — a true artist has to be ok with his reign being over.”
