Cocaine Bear Director Elizabeth Banks 'Loved' Working On James Gunn's Slither
By DANIELLE RYAN
One of “Cocaine Bear” director Elizabeth Banks’ early career standouts is her role as school teacher Starla Grant in James Gunn's “Slither.” Things get weird when Grant’s husband becomes the host for an alien parasite that wants to take over Earth, and she plays beauty to a terrifying beast, but the slimy slugs, tentacles, and exploding people in “Slither” were all fun for Banks.
Banks shared with SFX magazine, “I loved making 'Slither' and I've always wanted to make more of those kinds of movies. And a part of me thought that [Cocaine Bear] was a real opportunity to show that women, especially, are interested in this type of stuff. I think there's a mythology out there that women don't want to necessarily do a lot of CGI, or don't work in horror.”
“Cocaine Bear” might finally be the right project for Banks to satisfy her tonal and genre interests, considering that the movie is about a bear that ends up doing cocaine and goes on a rampage. The highly-anticipated movie contains all of the guts and gore that Banks appreciated back in her “Slither” days and attacks theaters on February 24, 2023.
