Christian Bale Counts a Critically-Panned Chris Farley Comedy Among His Favorite Films
By MATT RAINIS
As the director of many Adam Sandler movies like “Happy Gilmore,” Dennis Dugan probably isn’t accustomed to receiving much praise from his fellow Hollywood types. So, he may be surprised to learn that one of his earliest and least successful films has been called a favorite by none other than Christian Bale, star of “American Psycho” and “The Dark Knight.”
When asked about his favorite film in a 2016 interview, Bale said, “The default answer for me is ‘Beverly Hills Ninja.’ It’s an easy one to give because most people go, ‘What? Oh, okay.’ But Chris Farley’s fantastic.” “Beverly Hills Ninja” was the last film Chris Farley starred in before his tragic death in 1997 and is widely considered one of his worst films.
Bale added, “Clearly I’ve got other films, but I just watched that two nights in a row and was crying with laughter both times, so I just went, ‘Yeah I’ll give that as my answer.’” The actor’s opinion might be debatable, but his ability to watch a film two days in a row and still have the same reaction is impressive — plus, Farley really is fantastic in the movie.
