Chris Farley Getting Bored Off-Screen Led To Tommy Boy’s Most Famous Scene
By MATT RAINIS
There have been few more versatile comedians in history than Chris Farley. During the 1990s, if you were a director there was no one you’d rather have star in your comedy, so when it came time to cast “Tommy Boy,” Peter Segal made the no-brainer choice to go with Farley, whose goofing-off led to one of the movie’s funniest bits.
“Fat guy in a little coat” was one of Farley’s behind-the-scenes jokes on “SNL,” and Segal wanted to include it in the movie. As the story goes according to Segal, while filming, “[Chris] got a little bored… and he started goofing around off-camera. He sang the lyrics to the song…” The crew found the moment so funny they reshot the scene with Farley singing.
“Tommy Boy” started out with a script that was only 66 pages long, but thanks to the comedic minds of Chris Farley and David Spade, the movie’s runtime was filled with funny moments. The movie was a huge hit and is one of Paramount Picture’s best-selling movies of all time, and “fat guy in a little coat” is easily the movie’s funniest scene.
