Captain Marvel’s Kree Twist Was Inspired By A Real-Life Soldier’s Experience

“Captain Marvel” featured a fish-out-of-water storyline where an alien race adopts the heroine. However, the character’s motivations drew inspiration from a real-life soldier.
The film sees Carol Danvers as a member of the Kree Starforce after suffering from selective amnesia and being indoctrinated by the alien race.
The Skrulls are positioned as the villains of “Captain Marvel.” However, screenwriter Nicole Perlman felt it was “really important” that they weren’t the villains — the Kree were.
Perlman drew inspiration for this idea from her husband, a former soldier who found himself questioning his loyalties amid America’s War in Afghanistan.
She explained, “He was a chemical weapons officer and obviously there were no chemical weapons in Iraq, so he had this moment of wondering, ‘What if I’m not the good guy here?’”
Perlman continued, “That was a big influence for Captain Marvel too. She’s been told that they’re the good guys and she believes it. What happens when you crack that open?”
