Breaking Down That Amazing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Cameo
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Spoiler Warning!
This story contains spoilers for the season finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
The season finale of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” puts viewers in a what-if scenario where Pike is captain during the events of the “Balance of Terror” episode from the original “Star Trek,” instead of Kirk. This glimpse of a possible future, courtesy of a Klingon Time Crystal, shows Pike relying on diplomacy instead of Kirk’s military action and almost ends the conflict without violence.
Pike’s visit to the future, complete with an era-appropriate Enterprise, includes several classic characters who haven’t yet made an appearance in “Strange New Worlds.” Though not appearing on screen, we can hear the stalwart engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (originally played by James Doohan) consulting another character over the intercom about engine troubles.
A tragic event in an earlier episode of “Strange New Worlds” has left an engineering position on the Enterprise available and opens up the possibility for Scotty. Despite some canon material indicating Scotty may already be on board the Enterprise for “Strange New Worlds,” the showrunners could easily introduce a few gap years in Scotty’s career, removing him from the show.
