Bones Used One Of Its Biggest Episodes To Pay Tribute To Alfred Hitchcock
By DEVIN MEENAN
The 200th episode of “Bones” changed the show’s usual format by setting the non-canon story in 1950s Los Angeles and employing the style of Old Hollywood thrillers.
The episode titled “The 200th in the 10th” sees Temperance Brennan as an LAPD detective pursuing Seeley Booth, a jewel thief. However, the two must team up to solve a murder.
This ostensible homage to director Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, notably 1955’s “To Catch A Thief,” featured classic filmmaking techniques, like rear projection during driving scenes.
Booth’s actor and the episode’s director, David Boreanaz, rejects the idea of it only being a Hitchcock homage, as he didn’t emulate his style or review his films before shooting.
However, the episode’s writer, Stephen Nathan, was enthused about the comparison in a Collider interview, naming several Hitchcock films, like “To Catch A Thief,” as influences.
Nathan explained, “What we didn’t want to do, and hopefully we avoided, was an episode that was just a wink and a nod to [Hitchcock’s films].”
He added, “What we tried to do was do another great ‘Bones’ mystery. It’s a mystery and story that exists and was sustained on its own merits, and it was cloaked in this style.”
