Bones And All Star Taylor Russell On Finding Love Within The Horror
By HOAI-TRAN BUI
Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming gory romance “Bones and All” follows the story of Maren and Lee, two teen cannibals who form an unlikely romance. One of the film’s stars, Taylor Russel, who plays Maren, sat down with /Film for an exclusive interview about the film, and why she thinks despite the film’s horror plot, “It’s a romance at the end of the day.”
Although the film is about people with insatiable cannibal urges, Russel believes the story has universal appeal, partly because of the perspective of filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. Russel said, “… this movie was so personal for [Luca]… And I think because there was so much love that he put into this story, thinking about love, the loss of love, what it means to love… it permeates.”
In fact, Russel thinks the cannibal aspect helps the film explore love more deeply. As she describes it, “...this is a story about people who are isolated and feel ashamed of who they are in a lot of ways, but yet have to be who they are and find acceptance and love in the most grotesque, ugly versions of themselves… So that unconditional love is a strong message.”
In the film, Russel’s Maren falls for Lee, played by Timothée Chalamet, about who Russel had nice things to say. Russel said, “I knew that it was going to be a creative relationship that a lot would be birthed from…” and from their incredible chemistry on screen, it is clear they worked well together. To see it for yourself, “Bones and All” opens in theaters on November 18, 2022.
