Avatar: The Way Of Water Swims Past $1 Billion At The Box Office In Just Two Weeks
By RYAN SCOTT
“Avatar: The Way of Water" has officially joined the $1 billion club. James Cameron's long-awaited sequel to 2009's "Avatar" has managed to cross the box office milestone, but with such astounding earnings after just two weeks, there’s no telling how high the movie’s income might soar, considering that “Avatar” made close to $3 billion at the box office.
Including Tuesday’s income, "The Way of Water" has earned $317.1 million domestically and $712.7 million overseas, which puts it at $1.025 billion globally. That makes it the second highest-grossing movie of 2022, just above "Jurassic World Dominion" and behind "Top Gun: Maverick,” although both movies took much longer to cross the milestone.
The film is unique because it’s the first film in a while to cross the $1 billion threshold that wasn’t a superhero movie or a “Star Wars” movie. However, even with such astounding earnings, Disney is still hard-pressed to profit from the movie, which cost anywhere from $350 million to $450 million to make, meaning the break-even point could be as high as $1.5 billion.
