The Christopher Pike seen on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," as portrayed by Anson Mount, is a far cry from the angry Capt. Pike actor Jeffrey Hunter portrayed in the 1966 "Star Trek" pilot "The Cage". The new series frames Pike as a far warmer, more genial captain whose greatest strength as a commander seems to be wrangling a far more serious crew.
While Mount has brilliantly stepped into the role and loves the job — Capt. Pike isn't the character from the Trek universe he'd ideally play. That belongs to his favorite character in the franchise "Data."
When asked if he could swap roles with one of his current co-stars he responded: "I've made no secret of this. Data is, I think, maybe the most imaginative, interesting character in 'Star Trek' canon. Such an actor's dream to play a non-sentient being that has to learn what sentience is."
