An Improvised Alan Tudyk Slap In Rogue One Nearly Broke Diego Luna
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In Gareth Edwards' 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a courageous band of Rebels defies their superiors, goes rogue, and successfully retrieves the Death Star blueprints.
Actor Alan Tudyk portrayed the reprogrammed Empire android K-2SO in “Rogue One,” utilizing motion capture technology for both the character's voice and physical performance.
According to a 2017 article in Inverse, Tudyk added a spontaneous line of dialogue and delivered a playful slap across the head to co-star Diego Luna, resulting in laughter on set.
Taking place during a stroll with his comrades, K-2SO faces questioning from a Stormtrooper, resulting in the trooper mistakenly believing the droid is escorting Rebel prisoners.
K-2SO's line is, "These are prisoners." When the Stormtrooper asks where he is taking them, the droid awkwardly replies, "I am taking them... to imprison them... in prison."
When Cassian speaks to the Stormtrooper, K-2SO yells “Quiet!” and smacks his friend in the head. Tudyk's unscripted line was “And there's a fresh one if you mouth off again.”
Luna was forced to cover his mouth after being slapped because he couldn't help but break at Tudyk's improv. Fortunately, the camera began to pull away just in time to hide it.
