An Appalling Request Had Cool Hand Luke's Lucille Ready To Quit
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Stuart Rosenberg's 1967 prison film "Cool Hand Luke" follows Lucas Jackson as he's sentenced to two years of hard labor working on a chain gang in a Florida penitentiary.
Partway through the movie, Luke and his fellow prisoners see a young woman while working. The woman played by actress Joy Harmon is called "Lucille" in the film's credits.
Lucille's only scene is provocatively washing a car, used for the audience's amusement at the men's sexual frustration. Unfortunately, it wasn't all laughs behind the scenes.
Harmon spoke to EW about the gross requests from the filmmakers, wanting her to be as "uninhibited" as possible for the scene, and asked that she get high before shooting.
Luckily, the filmmakers didn't force her to do it. She added, "He [Rosenberg] said, 'Don't worry about it. We're not doing marijuana; you don't need it.' And it worked out fine."
