A Twilight Zone Episode & LOTR: The Return Of The King Have The Same Ending
By BEN PEARSON
Season 4, Episode 17 of "The Twilight Zone," titled "Passage on the Lady Anne," has a strikingly similar ending to J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
In the former, a couple, Alan and Eileen Ransome, board the Lady Anne, only to find that all the other passengers are elderly and the ship is on its final voyage to the afterlife.
In the end, the elderly passengers, aware of their impending fate, help the young couple escape on a lifeboat. In doing so, they leave the world a better place than they found it.
Similarly, in "The Return of the King," hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin accompany Frodo's uncle, Bilbo Baggins, to the Grey Havens, where he departs for the afterlife.
In a poignant twist, Frodo also chooses to take the journey across the sea, leaving behind the innocent Sam and entrusting him with the task of helping to rebuild their world.
