A Star Trek Prank From Data Himself Still Lives With Patrick Stewart
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Prior to his job playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” actor Patrick Stewart wasn't terribly well-known in film or television in the United States.
Because of Stewart's anonymity, Data’s actor Brent Spiner played a prank in Stewart’s dressing room. Stewart gave the details in his autobiography, “Making It So: A Memoir.”
Stewart stated, “I arrived at my trailer to find taped to its door a notice reading, ‘BEWARE: UNKNOWN BRITISH SHAKESPEAREAN ACTOR.’” Spiner soon became the joker of the cast.
Stewart had told this story in public before, leading some enterprising forgers and plagiarists to make fake versions of Spiner's sign. Stewart is the only one with a real copy.
