A Ranking Robert Redford's Best Movies
By FIONA UNDERHILL
15. Ordinary People
Winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards, "Ordinary People" was Robert Redford's directorial debut and was heavily praised for the performances.
Starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton in his breakthrough role, the movie followed the story of a grieving family trying to keep up appearances.
14. All is Lost
A stranded-at-sea movie, "All is Lost" is a small but mighty one-man-show starring a 77-year-old Redford in an almost entirely dialogue-free role.
Physically and mentally, it was a bold challenge for Redford, but he excels at silently reacting. His eyes take in everything, and his tense mouth shows disbelief or disapproval.
13. The Great Gatsby
While Redford was physically right for the role, Mia Farrow as Daisy is perfect casting, as is Karen Black as Myrtle, and director Jack Clayton at the helm.
Francis Ford Coppola’s script is a strong adaptation that tries to give us more backstory for Gatsby and Daisy, and more of a reason to root for them.
12. The Natural
"The Natural" is a period piece that tells the story of Roy Hobbs, a middle-aged man who joins an embattled baseball team as a rookie and turns their luck around.
The film co-stars Glenn Close as Hobbs' childhood sweetheart, Kim Basinger as a temptress, and Barbara Hershey in an opaque role: a woman dressed in a black mourning veil.
11. THREE Days
“Three Days of the Condor” is a spy thriller in which Redford has never looked cooler. From mirrored aviators to the denim shirt, his wardrobe is legendary.
The movie starts with the massacre of all of Joe Turner's (Redford) colleagues, forcing him to go on the run and making him paranoid for the rest of the film's runtime.
