A Forgotten Sci-Fi Show Forced Star Wars To Redesign The Millennium Falcon
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
The Millennium Falcon is not only one of the most iconic spaceships in “Star Wars” but also in the sci-fi genre. However, the ship didn’t always have its famous flying saucer design.
The Millennium Falcon was initially more tube-shaped and had more visible engines. This design was nearly identical to the Eagle Transporter from the 1975 TV series “Space: 1999.”
The Eagle Transporter was the main ship on the show, which was about the residents of Moonbase Alpha traveling through space after the Moon is knocked out of orbit.
Once George Lucas and his crew realized their similarities, they scrambled to invent a new ship. Industrial Light & Magic was given four weeks to redesign the Millennium Falcon.
While the iconic ship was redesigned from a rocket tube to a flying saucer, they used the original concept for Princess Leia’s Rebel Blockade Runner in the opening of “Star Wars.”
