A Classic Burt Bacharach Song Links Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid To Spider-Man 2
By JEREMY MATHAI
Prolific American composer Burt Bacharach, author of countless pop songs, classic film scores, and more, sadly passed away at 94. His contributions to music include award-winning songs in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Arthur," and his immense influence is found in the connective link between "Butch Cassidy" and Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" sequel.
In 2004’s "Spider-Man 2,” a profoundly overwhelmed Peter Parker leaves his powers behind and re-enters civilian life. Raimi places Peter in a wonderfully comedic and over-the-top montage, set to the strains of "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," Bacharach's song from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."
The images of Peter's pratfall and fixing his mangled bicycle, the outsized editing, and even the freeze-frame that ends the sequence cheekily call to mind similar elements from "Butch Cassidy.” Bacharach's legacy is far more significant than any one song or any two films, but the fact that his indelible career will always include these particular movies simply feels right.
